DJ0MZ: Morse Pilot (1999)

Morse Pilot open source Morse Trainer (legacy code)

This open source software was written for the Palm Pilot in 1999 as a Morse Code learning tool, with various exercise types and learning curve tracking. It was implemented onboard in Pocket C, a C dialect which was developed for the Palm Pilot by Jeremy Dewey of Orbworks. The app was implemented on an early realtime version of PalmOS. When multitasking versions of PalmOS were introduced the code timing became somewhat irregular. When PalmOS was replaced by WebOS, development was paused. HP took over Palm in 2010 and in the context of competition by new smartphone products discontinued the Palm Pilot hardware line, and wound up the Palm company. Further development of Morse Pilot had become unrealistic, and development was stopped.

The software was downloaded 35000 times and was widely used in the early years of the 21st century. My fondest memory is of a Boeing pilot who used the app to pass his mandatory Morse code exam. As 'payment' he kindly sent me a Boeing toolkit: handle plus a wide range of screwdriver and spanner heads.
